Ideal filter responses can’t be realized because they have instantaneous transitions in the frequency domain. This video introduces the concepts of filter gains and bands, which are used to define and constrain practical filter specifications. Transition bands are used to separate passbands and stopbands so that the gain can gradually change as needed.
