KSh 214: for a month, that was the most a litre of super petrol could cost in Nairobi. Out of every KSh 1,000 you put in your tank, 345 go to the government. So who really gets your fuel money?
Kenya's energy regulator publishes the answer every month, in a table most of us never read. We read it, line by line: what the fuel itself costs at Mombasa, what moving and selling it costs, and every tax and levy on top. Then we follow how a war in the Gulf reached Kenyan pumps, why prices lag the ships, the cushions that couldn't hold, and the kumbe: the cheaper the oil, the bigger the government's share of your litre.
At the end there's a calculator. Fill up KSh 5,000 of petrol and see where your money goes.
