Your child rolls their eyes, snaps “Whatever,” or says, “You’re so annoying.” You feel yourself getting angry. You want to address it, but how do you respond without yelling, arguing, or letting hurtful behavior slide? In this episode of Art of Raising Humans, Kyle and Sara Wester share practical ways to handle disrespect, hold clear limits, and help children and teens express frustration without attacking others. We explore why these moments trigger parents so deeply, how to distinguish disagreement from hurtful behavior, and what children need to learn beyond “Don’t talk to me that way.” You’ll hear a familiar conflict over putting away a phone and examples of what to say during the moment and afterward. You’ll learn: How to respond to eye rolls, backtalk, and insults with clear expectations. How to acknowledge your child’s feelings while keeping the limit. What your own response teaches your child about respect. How to practice better communication and meaningful repair outside the conflict. One shift to try: When you think, “My child is being disrespectful,” ask, “What did they do, and what do I want to help them practice instead?” We can take their feelings seriously and take their behavior seriously. These moments give us opportunities to teach children how to disagree, handle disappointment, and take responsibility for their impact. Want support putting this into practice in your family?
