Ferdowsi is celebrated as the most influential figure in Persian literature and one of the greatest in the history of literature. Ferdowsi, an iconic poet and his epic Shahnameh are considered as the chief instigators of the revival of Persian (Farsi) cultural traditions after the Arab conquest. It tells heroic tales of ancient Persia. He worked for thirty years to finish this masterpiece. Legend has it that Ferdowsi’s lifework was not appreciated by King Mahmud of Ghazneh. He is said to have died around 1020 in poverty and embittered by royal neglect, though confident of his poem’s ultimate fame.
