Join us for our Wednesday night devotional and Bible class as we open Matthew 14:22-29 and consider the story of Jesus walking on the water. While Peter stepped out of the boat, the other eleven disciples stayed behind, close enough to hear the invitation but too bound by fear to move. This lesson, titled "Missed Opportunities," challenges us to see that proximity to Jesus is not the same as possessing His power and purpose. We explore three lesson points: you can be in proximity and still miss possibility; know the danger of confusing safety with security; and the reward will always be greater than the risk. Whether you are joining us in person or online, we pray this teaching encourages you to step out in faith when Jesus says, "Come."

Title: Missed Opportunities
Scripture: Matthew 14:22-29, Matthew 10
Bible Class Summary
Drawing from Matthew 14:22-29, the teacher focuses not on Peter but on the eleven disciples who stayed in the boat. Though they were in the same storm, saw the same Jesus, and heard the same invitation, only Peter stepped out. The lesson warns that proximity to Jesus and His word is not the same as possessing the power and purpose He offers. It contrasts safety, which is about a controlled environment, with security, which is found in the presence of Jesus. The teacher urges the class not to let fear and comfort keep them in the boat, because the reward of stepping out in faith will always be greater than the risk, and some revelation about God and about ourselves comes only through risk.
Lesson Points
25:30 You Can Be in Proximity and Still Miss Possibility (Matthew 14:22-29, Matthew 10)
30:30 Know the Danger of Confusing Safety with Security (Matthew 14:22-29)
37:30 The Reward Will Always Be Greater Than the Risk (Matthew 14:22-29)
Bible Study Guide
Read Matthew 14:22-29 together. Note who was in the boat, who heard the invitation, and who actually stepped out.
The teacher says life is measured by the moments we seize. What opportunities has God placed before you that you have hesitated to seize?
The eleven disciples were in proximity to Jesus and heard the same invitation as Peter. What does it mean that proximity without participation leaves you present but powerless?
The lesson defines safety as avoiding danger in a controlled environment and security as being anchored in the presence of Jesus. Where in your life are you choosing safety over security?
The teacher mentions the bystander effect, where everyone assumes someone else will act. How does that pattern show up in your church, family, or workplace?
Peter learned things about Jesus and about himself that the others did not because he stepped out. What might you learn about God and yourself by taking a step of faith?
The lesson says the reward will always be greater than the risk. What risk is God asking you to take, and what reward might be on the other side?
The teacher says comfort zones protect you but also paralyze you. What comfort zone is currently paralyzing your growth?
Peter's testimony was personal: he walked, he sank, and he was saved. What is your own testimony of stepping out in faith?
Close by praying for boldness to step out of the boat when Jesus says, "Come."
