The Phillies won their first World Series championship at Veterans Stadium. The Eagles beat Dallas there to reach the Super Bowl. On March 21, 2004, their shared stadium came down in about 62 seconds.
This Fallen & Forgotten documentary follows the Vet from its 1971 opening to its final demolition. Built for baseball and football in South Philadelphia, the concrete bowl brought two teams together under one address.
The story includes Steve Carlton’s early years with the Phillies and Tug McGraw’s championship-clinching strikeout in the 1980 World Series. We revisit the Eagles’ January 1981 NFC Championship victory, then examine the unsafe field that stopped their scheduled 2001 preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens before kickoff.
The stadium’s ending came in stages. The Eagles left for Lincoln Financial Field, and the Phillies moved to Citizens Bank Park. Their final games at the Vet became separate farewells before the old bowl disappeared.
Follow the history of the building that held both teams’ triumphs—and the problems that became part of its reputation.
