🥀🏰 DANCE WITH THE BEAST What happens when fear is wrapped in roses, violence is softened by a love story, and captivity is transformed into a ballroom dance? “Dance With the Beast” examines the relationship portrayed in Beauty and the Beast through a very different lens. A frightened young woman. An isolated castle. Explosive anger. Intimidation. Control. Captivity. And eventually—a romance. The story asks us to look beneath the Beast’s rage and see his wounded heart. But this song asks another question: What did little girls learn while they were watching? Be patient with his anger. Look for the good underneath his rage. Stay long enough and perhaps he’ll change. Believe that your love can reach the man nobody else can. Those ideas can become dangerous when carried from fantasy into real relationships. Compassion does not require someone to remain in danger. Understanding another person’s wounds does not make violence acceptable. And a woman is not responsible for enduring abuse long enough to transform the person hurting her. The final words of this song deliberately invoke “Stockholm syndrome”—a popular term associated with emotional bonds that can sometimes develop in situations involving captivity or abuse. It is not presented here as a clinical diagnosis of Belle or as the definitive psychological explanation of the film. It is a question meant to make us examine what the fairytale taught us to romanticize. Because remove the enchanted castle. Remove the talking furniture. Remove the roses. Remove the swelling orchestra. Then look at the relationship again. Would we still call it a love story? Research it. Test it. Question it. Teach our daughters that love does not require them to surrender their safety, their voice, or themselves. 🥀 No more cages wrapped in roses. 🔥 Guts of Grace 🎵 Music by Beth Collette 📖 Lyrics included “Test all things; hold fast what is good.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:21 From the album/playlist: THE MAGIC THEY SOLD US — DISNEY EXPOSED
