Today I'm reacting to The Young Rascals – “How Can I Be Sure,” one of the group's most beautiful and distinctive songs from the 1960s. Released in 1967, “How Can I Be Sure” showcases a very different side of The Young Rascals. Rather than relying purely on the energetic blue-eyed soul they're famous for, this song has an almost European feel to it, with its unusual arrangement, emotional melody and wonderful lead vocal from Felix Cavaliere. There's something timeless about the uncertainty expressed in the song. It's romantic, vulnerable and beautifully arranged, while still sounding unmistakably like a record from that extraordinary period of popular music. The more music I discover from the 1960s, the more I'm struck by just how adventurous mainstream records could be.
