Known in Roman times as Ripa, it has been inhabited since antiquity and served for centuries as the lake's most important northern port. Its strategic position made it fiercely contested throughout the Middle Ages — ruled in turn by the Scaligeri, the Visconti, the Counts of Tyrol, and the Republic of Venice. It passed under Austrian rule in 1815 and only became part of Italy in 1918, at the end of the First World War. By the mid-19th century, its mild climate and stunning lakeside setting had already made it a fashionable destination for European travellers and aristocracy. The historic centre is a compact tangle of arcaded streets and elegant Liberty-style buildings, clustered around the medieval harbour. Still intact medieval walls, towers and the 12th-century Rocca fortress give the town a layered, well-preserved character rare for a place so popular.
