Hi All!
In this video, I'm adding a DXPatrol GPS Disciplined Oscillator (GPSDO) to my ham radio station and using its 10 MHz reference output with my FlexRadio FLEX-8600 and Q5 Signal transverters.
The goal is simple: give the radio a highly stable and accurate frequency reference that's disciplined by GPS.
We'll take a quick look at how the GPSDO works and some of its features, then put it on the bench and test the 10 MHz output with a frequency counter. I'll also use the 10 MHz WWV signal from Fort Collins, Colorado, as an on-air reference to give a visual of the accuracy the GPSDO provides to my FLEX-8600.
Is this level of frequency accuracy necessary for everyday ham radio? Probably not! But as I continue experimenting with weak-signal VHF operation—and eventually 2-meter moonbounce (EME)—frequency stability becomes increasingly important.
And besides... sometimes it's fun to see just how accurate we can make things!

So what do you think? Is a GPSDO a worthwhile addition to a ham radio station, or is this complete overkill? Let me know in the comments!
