A side-by-side look at Theda Bara — the silent-era "vamp" of the 1910s — comparing a photograph of her before she was famous, with no makeup, against her transformed screen image. The two are aligned and dissolved together to show that this is genuinely the same woman, and exactly how her makeup and hairstyling reshaped the structure of her face into the vamp look. Some people don't even believe the early photo is her, she looks so different — I didn't quite believe it myself when I first saw the 1906 picture. That's the point of this video: not a tutorial, but a visual demonstration of how Theda Bara and her stylists reengineered her face. I couldn't make a normal makeup tutorial of her look, because I don't have her distinctive triangular face shape, so instead this shows how the transformation was actually done. A couple of honest notes on the alignment: a few features don't line up perfectly. I believe one of the photos is mirror-flipped (I'm not sure which), which throws her natural facial asymmetries onto opposite sides, and her expression differs slightly between the two shots, making the eyes and brows hard to match exactly. Good for silent film fans, Theda Bara and the original vamp, early Hollywood and 1910s history, vintage makeup and beauty transformations, and before-and-after makeup reveals.
