Samuel Bellamy – The Robin Hood of the Seas Samuel Bellamy was born in 1689 and became a pirate captain in the early 18th century. According to surviving accounts, he was known as a well-mannered and generous man, and some members of his crew regarded him as the “Robin Hood of the Seas.” Among pirates, he supported a relatively equal distribution of plunder and greater participation by the crew in decision-making. What makes him particularly fascinating is his way of thinking. In one of the famous speeches attributed to him, he criticized the wealthy and those in positions of power who hid behind the law. He believed that exploitation could also occur in lawful trade, but that society often accepted it as legitimate. Can someone be a kind-hearted person in a world they perceive as unjust?
