Rockport: The 1990s Layout That Feels Like Chandwell’s Big Brother

This video was originally going to be a Members’ Update - a quiet catch-up from the workbench - but it ended up becoming something much more special. I set off by train to Rochdale to visit my good friend Adrian, creator of the incredible Rockport layout. Like Chandwell, it’s a fictional town set in the early 1990s, but in Adrian’s world, we’re in a Manchester suburb, and everything is built in 00 gauge. His modelling has that same spirit I love: card, craft, and character. On the way, the train passes through Sowerby Bridge, where I spot the real-life building that inspired Chandwell Town Hall. It’s one of those small, satisfying moments when real and fictional worlds overlap - a reminder of how the things we love often find their way back into our creative work. Once in Rochdale, Adrian shows me around Rockport: a beautifully observed, slightly gritty high street that feels alive with everyday stories. His use of card gives the whole layout a warmth and authenticity that I think everyone will appreciate.
