Frédéric Chaslin conducts Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36, composed between 1801 and 1802 in Vienna — a work of striking vitality and expansion, where Beethoven pushes beyond Classical elegance into a more assertive, exuberant, and forward-looking musical language, already foreshadowing the revolutionary path ahead.
Written during a deeply personal period marked by the crisis expressed in the Heiligenstadt Testament, this symphony reveals a fascinating paradox: despite the composer’s growing awareness of his deafness, the music radiates energy, humor, and boldness. The famous Larghetto unfolds with lyrical breadth, while the Scherzo — replacing the traditional minuet — marks a decisive step toward Beethoven’s mature style. The final movement bursts with wit and almost defiant joy.
This recording is part of The Beethoven Project, created and led by Frédéric Chaslin, an ambitious undertaking dedicated to recording the complete orchestral works and the complete piano works of Beethoven in a unified artistic vision.
Frédéric Chaslin, conductor and pianist, brings a deeply personal and structurally informed interpretation to this repertoire, combining his experience on both sides of the score.
The Beethoven Project is published by UNISTAGE, the company founded by Frédéric Chaslin, conceived as a platform for independent, high-level artistic productions and innovative musical dissemination.
