On 1 September 1859 Richard Carrington watched the first solar flare ever recorded. Within a day the most intense geomagnetic storm on record lit auroras as far as Hawaii and made telegraph wires spark. What would the same storm do today? We follow the history, the physics of flares and coronal mass ejections, what happens when the cloud hits Earth's magnetic field, and the realistic consequences for satellites, GPS and power grids, with real historical cases (Québec 1989, Starlink 2022, May 2024) and published risk estimates. Confirmed history, plausible consequences and scenario estimates are kept apart; the animations are scientific visualisations, not real footage.
