Beginning of Fall Ride Through Small-Town Maryland Come along for another relaxing ride through Maryland neighborhoods, peaceful bike paths, wooded trails, quiet backroads, and, of course, another visit to the ever-unpredictable haunted golf course. No racing, no training plans, and no pressure to chase personal records. Just a bicycle, the beginning of a new season, some relaxing nature sounds, and weather that apparently didn’t receive the memo that summer is supposed to be ending. One of my favorite parts of documenting the same roads and trails throughout the year is seeing just how dramatically they can change depending on the weather, season, and time of day. Today marks the beginning of fall for the channel and, with it, an entirely new cycle of rides through the same familiar Maryland landscape. We spent the summer riding this route through blazing sunshine, heat waves, thunderstorms, heavy rain, fallen trees, crowded trails, quiet evenings, wildlife encounters, and just about every level of humidity Maryland could throw at us. Now we get to watch the entire route transform again as summer slowly gives way to fall. Apparently, though, the humidity intends to come with us. Today brought one of the strangest combinations of weather we’ve experienced yet. There was a genuinely cool breeze moving through much of the ride, making it feel like fall was finally beginning to arrive. At the exact same time, the humidity was absolutely brutal. Somehow I was riding through cool air while also sweating more than any reasonable human being should be capable of sweating. Still, this is exactly why I wanted to keep documenting the same route throughout the year. We’ve spent months watching these woods, lakes, neighborhoods, parks, and backroads during the height of summer, and now the changes should start becoming much more obvious. The days are already getting shorter, the evenings are becoming cooler, and before long the bright green canopy we’ve been riding beneath all summer will begin shifting toward the yellows, oranges, reds, and browns of fall. And yes, before the gear experts arrive in the comments, I am fully aware that I don’t shift nearly as often as I probably should. My strategy remains simple: put the bike in a difficult gear and see who gives up first, me or the drivetrain. Somehow, we both survived the entire summer experiment, so I suppose we’re officially extending the competition into fall.
