Signalling Evolution: From Fixed Blocks to CBTC
Traditional signalling has evolved to maximize track capacity while maintaining rigorous safety standards.
Fixed Block Systems: The track is divided into sections (blocks). Only one train is permitted per block to prevent collisions
. Track occupancy is detected by physical wayside equipment, such as track circuits or axle counters
. The limitation of this system is that block lengths are static, often leading to wasted track space and reduced capacity

Moving Block Systems: This approach utilizes continuous train positioning instead of fixed physical sections
. Trains calculate their own position using on-board sensors (odometers/tachometers) and transmit this data via radio to wayside equipment
. This allows the system to calculate dynamic safety distances (protection points) between trains, significantly increasing capacity and reducing headways

Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC): Often used in metros, CBTC is a moving block system that relies on continuous radio communication between the train and a central control system
