Amber Curry, RVT Animal Control Officers and shelter staff are often the first to encounter animals in crisis, making their response crucial. This session will cover how to recognize and respond to medical emergencies both at the shelter and in the field, using a first-responder approach to first aid. Attendees will learn how to assess injuries, stabilize animals in distress, and make informed decisions before veterinary care is available. We’ll also discuss essential first aid supplies ACOs should carry in their vehicles to be prepared for emergencies on the go. A brief introduction to basic small animal CPR techniques will be included, but the primary focus will be on practical, real-world emergency response. By the end of this session, participants will feel more confident handling urgent medical situations, improving both animal welfare and field safety.
