This beautiful old National NV-7000B VHS recorder arrived covered in dirt, dust and corrosion, with frozen gears, deteriorated belts and a tired loading mechanism. But this early full-logic VHS dinosaur was far too charming to abandon! In this video, I strip down and clean the machine, free up the mechanism, replace several belts, improvise a temporary idler repair and carefully bring this wonderfully retro VCR back to life. With its wooden side panels, huge power supply components, three substantial solenoids and wonderfully mechanical tape-loading action, the NV-7000B comes from an era when video recorders were built to be repaired rather than discarded. This particular machine is a Middle Eastern multi-system version supporting PAL, SECAM and NTSC, along with selectable operation from 110 to 240 volts. It may not become a frontline professional transfer machine, but as a nostalgic shelf queen and working example of early VHS engineering, it is absolutely magnificent.
