"In today’s video, we explore the Drechsler Palace, one of Budapest’s most beautiful and historic 19th-century palaces, located on Andrássy Avenue, right across from the Opera House. This building is not only an architectural gem but also an iconic center of Hungarian culture and social life.
The palace was designed and built between 1883 and 1886 by Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos, combining French Renaissance and Neo-Renaissance styles. Its intricate facade, finely carved stone ornaments, arched windows, and decorative cornices reflect the elegance of turn-of-the-century Budapest. Don’t miss the beautifully restored roof and facade details, which were carefully preserved during the renovation.
On the ground floor, the palace once housed the famous Drechsler Café, a key social hub where artists, musicians, writers, and citizens gathered to talk, debate, or simply enjoy the lively café culture of Budapest. Upstairs, the building hosted ballet education, with legendary teachers such as Imre Dózsa training generations of Hungarian dancers. For decades, the palace was a cradle of Hungarian ballet.
In the mid-20th century, the building was nationalized, and in 2002, the ballet school moved to a modern facility on Kolumbusz Street. The Drechsler Palace remained empty for years, but following an extensive renovation, it regained its former glory and now houses the W Hotel Budapest, including stunning luxury suites. In this video, we tour the historic spaces, admire the facade, and even show you a luxurious suite, blending history with modern elegance.
If you love Budapest history, Hungarian ballet, beautiful architecture, or elegant café culture, this video is for you!
