Ludovico Einaudi – Oltremare | Harp – Danielle Riegel

Oltremare — “Beyond the Sea” — is one of Ludovico Einaudi’s most expansive compositions, originally released on his 2006 album Divenire. Divenire means “becoming”, and transformation lies at the heart of the album. Einaudi has described its music as being in continual metamorphosis, developing through evolving sound, micro-variations and improvisation. The project itself grew from an intense experience of performing in the Dolomites, surrounded by the forces of nature — water, space and wind. In Oltremare, that sense of movement can be heard across an unusually long musical arc. Repeating figures create a continuous pulse beneath the melody; patterns return and subtly change; harmonies gradually shift; tension grows and recedes. The music seems to move in waves — always recognisable, yet never quite returning to exactly the same place. On the harp, this structure takes on another dimension. Resonance and overtones allow one harmony to continue sounding into the next, while the direct contact between fingertips and strings makes it possible to shape the attack, colour and decay of every note.
