Clara Schumann: Variations on a Theme By Robert Schumann, op. 20
Andrew Chen, piano
Clara Schumann’s "Variations on a Theme By Robert Schumann, op. 20," Robert Schumann’s own "Theme and Variations in E-flat major," and Brahms’s "Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann, op. 9," were all written between 1853 and 1854. All reflect the strong relationships between the three musicians: the loving marriage of Robert and Clara Schumann, the profound friendship between Clara and Brahms, and the mutual respect and admiration the two men shared. Clara’s Variations op. 20, a set of seven variations written in May and June 1853, were dedicated to her husband for his 43rd birthday and based on the theme of his Bunte Blätter (Colored Leaves) op. 9.
