Hexham was opened in 1835 and is one of the world's oldest purpose built railway stations. Until grouping it was owned and operated by the North Eastern Railway. It lies on the Tyne Valley Line that runs between Newcastle and Carlisle. It features one of only two surviving over-line sugnal boxes dating from 1896, the other being at Wylam. The station has engineering department sidings and a passing loop.
