Every move an airplane makes — every climb, every turn, every landing — starts with a small movement of one of its controls. In Episode 1 of Learn to Fly, your instructor Cindy walks you round the controls of a Cessna 172 at Wonderboom, then takes you up to see what each one does in the air. In this lesson: • The three axes: roll, pitch and yaw • The control wheel and ailerons, the elevator, and the rudder pedals • Throttle and mixture, elevator trim, and the flaps (with their speed limits) • In the air: what each control does, and the further effects (yaw brings roll, roll brings yaw) • How airspeed changes the feel of the controls, and what power does to the nose • Trimming, and flying with flap • The three mistakes students make most, and how to avoid them This series shows you what happens and why. It doesn't replace flying with a qualified instructor.
