Considering the pursuit of a career in being professional arm candy for male athletes? Got a “manifesting being a WAG” board on your Pinterest account? You might want to watch this PSA. While the men have historically been the protagonists of sports, a silent fandom for the supporting cast had been slowly building. And now, we get to see it in real time–the rise of WAG culture. The women standing in the private boxes and hospitality suites, clapping their hands together and being sweet and pleasant, lest they be deemed difficult or a gold digger. Being a background character in a famous man’s narrative has quietly become one of the most desired roles in modern celebrity and almost nobody talks about the corporations building the job description or why young women and girls keep applying for it. This video essay –a remake of an old one of mine– will dismantle how sports media and tabloid culture manufactured the “WAG” as a distinct social category, and how it transformed proximity to male achievement into its own strange, desirable and highly precarious form of fame. The labor of visibility this role demands and the narrow script women are expected to perform to stay “worthy” are part of the inevitability of being disposable that is built into the whole arrangement. Because, unlike the male athlete, the WAG's relevance has an expiration date that’s not tied to a multimillion dollar contract or an ACL injury, but to a simple change in his mind. You will also help me to unpack the double standard baked into the role: praised for performing, punished for ambition and treated as a run-of-the-mill influencer the moment the relationship –or the athlete's form– falls apart. Examining the figures who defined the archetype –like Victoria Beckham and Cheryl Cole– and the partners pioneering WAG culture in social media and navigating its contradictions –Brittany Mahomes, Alexandra Saint Mleux and Tolami Benson– this is an analysis of a phenomenon much more dangerous than a simple Alo Yoga sponsorship and cute TikTok couple goals videos. 00:00 Introduction 02:50 Theories and concepts 05:48 The anatomy of the WAG fantasy 08:08 The WAG corporate pipeline and commodification of femininity 11:58 WAG culture, bioessentialism and male infantilization 18:31 The dark side of being a WAG and the shattered fantasy 22:56 Internalized misogyny in WAG culture 26:41 Final thoughts and conclusions Read up on Catherine Hakim’s erotic capital: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_...
