What was supposed to be a simple run from Winslow to La Conner turned into something completely different when the weather forced us onto Hat Island (Gedney Island) — a private island most boaters sail right past.No public dock. No stores. No car ferry. Just 260 families, a desalination plant that turns seawater into drinking water, free-roaming dogs, a nine-hole golf course, and a 150-year-old unsolved murder with buried treasure still missing. Then things got interesting: our Dutch canal boat, Halve Maan II, started taking on water through the dripless shaft seal… and we ended up high-centered in the mud on a falling minus tide. This is the full story of how we discovered Hat Island, fixed a leaking seal the hard way, ran aground in Coupeville, and finally made it to La Conner — all aboard an oddball steel canal boat that was never meant for these waters.
