The tourist attraction closed eleven years ago. The pelican never stopped showing up. A fast, brass-lit Cowpunk portrait of the man who became a town's directions. Monroe "Mo" Gaines spent twenty-seven summers inside the Pelican Pete costume at Maribel's Sea Palace. The attraction closed. He kept the head. Every Friday since, he has stood beside Saltline Road in the same repaired suit, waving traffic toward whichever local cause needs attention that week — tax filing, used tires, a blood drive, a school-band car wash. Newcomers assume he is advertising something. Locals just use him as a landmark: turn left at the pelican. Then the comedy gives way. His late wife June first noticed him waving outside the attraction, and honked every Friday at 5:10 for twenty-three years — long after she knew exactly who was inside the suit. Mo keeps waving not because he refuses change, but because public foolishness became a private ritual.
