Welcome to Session 3 of our Node.js Bootcamp at @CodeKerdos!
In this session, we dive into the fundamentals of backend development by building a server from scratch using Node.js without any external frameworks. The goal is to understand how a server works under the hood before moving on to frameworks like Express.js.
We’ll explore how to initialize a Node.js project, create an HTTP server, handle incoming requests, send responses, log requests, parse URLs, and understand the HTTP methods used in real-world backend applications.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS SESSION
✅ Node.js Project Setup: Initialize a project using npm init and understand the role of package.json.
✅ Creating an HTTP Server: Use Node.js's built-in http module to create a server from scratch.
✅ Running a Server: Understand ports, server execution, and why restarting the server is necessary when code changes.
✅ Request and Response Cycle: Learn how servers receive client requests and return appropriate responses.
✅ Logging with the File System Module: Use Node.js's fs module to log incoming requests to a file.
✅ Asynchronous vs. Synchronous Operations: Understand why asynchronous operations like fs.appendFile() are generally preferred over blocking operations like fs.appendFileSync() in server-side code.
✅ URL Parsing: Learn how to parse URLs, identify request paths, and extract query parameters for handling dynamic inputs.
✅ HTTP Methods and CRUD Operations: Understand the purpose of the five common HTTP methods:
GET – Retrieve data.
POST – Create new data.
PUT – Replace existing data.
PATCH – Partially update existing data.
DELETE – Remove data.
WHY LEARN NODE.JS WITHOUT FRAMEWORKS?
Frameworks like Express.js make backend development easier, but understanding the fundamentals first helps you appreciate what happens behind the scenes.
By building a server using Node.js's core modules, you'll develop a stronger understanding of HTTP communication, request handling, file operations, and the foundations of REST APIs.
In upcoming sessions, we'll build on these concepts and explore how frameworks like Express.js simplify backend development.
WHO IS THIS SESSION FOR?
• Beginners learning Node.js and backend development.
• Developers who want to understand how HTTP servers work internally.
• Students preparing for backend development interviews.
• Anyone who wants to build a strong foundation before learning Express.js and REST APIs.
If you're following the bootcamp, make sure to practice the concepts covered in this session by building and experimenting with your own Node.js server.
If you find this session helpful, don't forget to like the video, share it with fellow developers, and subscribe to the channel for upcoming bootcamp sessions!
