Their armor dented, spirits high, They laughed so loud the walls replied. The bard began: “Our king’s so wise, He taxes dreams and calls it prize! He shines his crown ‘cause brains are gone — The light inside just moved along!” The mage chimed in, “His laws ignite, Like my worst spell on market night.” The rogue laughed hard, “His guards so brave, They flee ahead to watch the grave!” The paladin sighed, “His holy gate? Costs coin to pray — how kind of fate.” The monk half-slurred, “I’d bless his reign, If he’d stop charging grace by grain.” Raise your mugs and mock the crown, When ale runs deep, the truth spills down. Kings may rule and hearts may groan, But honest souls still stand their own. Behind their cheer, beyond the glow, A hooded man sat, calm and low. He watched the laughter, sipped his ale, Each jest a spark, each word a nail. Their voices rose, the barroom roared, They joked of kings, of crowns ignored. He listened long, then stood at last, And slowly stepped from shadows cast. He reached their fire and raised his cup: “Good tales you tell — so fill it up. But tell me, friends, if he’s so weak, Why does his name still make you speak?” Paladin: “Just jest and ale, a harmless round!” Hooded Man: “Strange harm it makes, in every town.” Mage: “You sound like one who’s met the crown.” Hooded Man: “Perhaps I’ve walked where kings sit down.” Raise your mugs and mock the crown, For every jest hides truth’s renown. The ale is bold, the tongue is free, And laughter keeps good company. He leaned in close, his voice was steel, “Would you say so, if he could feel? If he stood here, if he could hear — Would ale still chase away your fear?” The monk, now red, slammed down his cup, “Let him come, we’ll speak straight up! We are free men, our words our blades!” The hooded man just smiled, unfazed. “Then let them cut,” he softly said, “And see which truth draws blood instead.” The bard’s hand froze upon his strings, The fire hissed, the shadows clings. Then laughter died, the hood fell low, And golden hair caught firelight’s glow. A pin of gold, a royal crest — The breath was caught in every chest. He stood before them, calm, alive, The very king they’d just deride. No guards, no crown, no regal guard — Just weary eyes, and battle scars. He raised his mug and softly said, “Your jests have more truth than I’ve read. At court they praise, at home they kneel, But here… at least, the truth feels real.” Raise your mugs and mock the crown, For truth is rare in silken gown. Let hearts speak clear and ale be poured, For even kings may need the word. He sat once more, the fire glowed, The tension eased, the ale reflowed. He drank with them and shared their jest, Told tales of court, confessed, confessed: “I fled the throne to breathe, to see, If someone spoke of truth to me.” The bard then bowed, “We meant no harm.” The king just laughed, “Your words have charm. Sing this night in tavern lore — So kings remember pride no more.” He left at dawn, the rain had passed, A coin bag glimmered near the glass. A note within, its ink still wet: “For honesty — not debt, but debt.” Raise your mugs and mock the crown, The truth we drink will never drown. If kings can laugh and hearts can sing, Then maybe peace begins within. So if you jest by tavern flame, And think your wit a harmless game — Check twice before your ale goes down The truth itself might wear the crown #BardsOfEthernia #FantasyMusic #TavernSong #DnD #Bardcore #EpicFantasy #MedievalTales #FantasyStory #BardSong #TavernMusic #RPGMusic #FantasyLore
