She Never Signed The DIVORCE. His Mistress Never Said Goodbye. One DOLLAR Ended It: Millicent Hearst Officially, she was the wife of the most powerful publisher in America for forty-eight years, and when he died, she was his widow. But for most of those years William Randolph Hearst lived three thousand miles away with Marion Davies, and everyone who mattered in New York knew it. Millicent Willson had been a teenage dancer in a bicycle costume on Broadway. She married Hearst at Grace Church in 1903, raised five sons, built a milk fund for the babies of the Lower East Side, and refused, year after year, to give him the divorce he wanted. In 1950 he signed a secret paper that would have handed his empire to his mistress. In 1951 the widow walked around his casket while the other woman sat alone in Beverly Hills. Then came a deal worth one dollar a year. It all started in a church called Grace.
