How is AI eating the world's memory, and why could it make your electronics more expensive? This illustrated explainer connects AI memory demand, HBM and DRAM production, and the prices you see in shops.
See why AI models need room for weights and conversation caches, how high bandwidth memory differs from DDR5, LPDDR and GDDR, and why building more memory takes time. We follow the potential effects on PCs, phones, gaming graphics cards and consoles—with clear distinctions between manufacturing pressure and guaranteed retail price increases.

QUALIFICATIONS
Research checked September 6, 2026. The roughly 3:1 comparison is Micron's HBM3E versus DDR5 wafer requirement for equal bits on the same node; it is not a universal HBM ratio or a retail price multiplier. The 140 GB example covers weights only at two bytes per parameter. H200 bandwidth is a rated memory specification, not internet speed. Eight devices' memory is added arithmetically, not presented as one unified pool. Consumer price examples are conditional; the 20% example is hypothetical.
PRODUCTION
AI-assisted illustrated artwork and synthetic Chatterbox narration using a user-authorized voice reference. Labels, diagrams, captions and edits were produced locally. Background pulse and sound effects are original procedural audio. The server eating a RAM stick is a cartoon metaphor for demand.
