It says twenty dollars on the sign. You hand over your keys, your car disappears behind a door for twenty minutes, and you sit in the waiting room with the old coffee. Most of the time, that's all it is. Sometimes it isn't.
I spent nineteen years inside a dealership service department. In this video, I walk you through the six moments of an oil change where things go wrong, from the price on the sign to the first minute after they hand you back your keys. Hidden cameras caught some of it. One family ended up needing a new engine. Stay to the end for the five checks I'd do before paying anybody to change your oil. One of them takes ten seconds.
Nobody pays me to say any of this. Not a dealer, not a parts store, not an oil company.
Tell me in the comments: what's the biggest bill you were ever handed when all you came in for was an oil change? I read every one.
One more thing. After all those years at the counter, I'm finally putting everything I know into a book: how to keep your car running for years, what to buy, what to walk away from, and how never to overpay a shop or a dealer again. Before it's ready, I'll give you the first part for free, as a PDF. Subscribe so you're the first to get it, friend.

I'm a retired mechanic sharing what I learned over the years. This is general information, not a diagnosis of your car. Check your owner's manual and talk to a mechanic you trust before any repair. The stories in this video come from public news reports and investigations.
