The Ashcombe Tunnel manual is two hundred and fourteen pages long. Page 14 is the only page in it that tells you when it applies: between 3:00 and 3:20 in the morning. It tells you to open two fans, close a damper a mile away, stand still for two minutes and forty seconds, never enter the bore — and to record the readings you take as "normal." I ran that page four hundred and ninety-one times. This is what I found out about why it's there.
