In this episode we walk through Novosibirsk, Siberia's largest and most populous city, built along the banks of the Ob River. Founded in 1893 as a bridge-construction settlement for the Trans-Siberian Railway (originally called Novonikolayevsk), it has grown into Russia's third-largest city. We visit the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (built 1897–1899), one of the city's oldest stone buildings, constructed in Neo-Byzantine style as a monument to Tsar Alexander III, who initiated the Trans-Siberian Railway. Next is the small but striking Saint Nicholas Chapel, followed by the architectural showpiece of the city — the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre (NOVAT), completed in 1944–45, the largest theatre building in Russia, famous for its massive shell-like dome.
