Middle Head Fort: One Piece in Sydney’s Defence

This video explores some of the remarkable military history of Sydney’s Middle Head, from its first sandstone battery in 1801 through more than a century of evolving coastal defences. Discover the tunnels, gun emplacements, underground magazines, observation posts and disappearing guns built to protect the harbour, along with the dramatic 1891 submarine mine explosion that killed four military personnel. We’ll also look at the fortifications’ role during the Second World War, including the 1942 Japanese midget submarine attack, before following their evolution into the Cold War era and eventual decommissioning.
