Castle of Herburts in Dobromyl

🇵🇱 Zamek Herburtów w Dobromilu 🇺🇦 Замок Ґербуртів у Добромилі Construction period: Approximate construction period from the 1550s to 1616. Founders: Polish noblemen and Castellan of Lwow Stanislaw Herburt and Jan Szczesny Herburt. Historical note: The castle in Dobromyl (currently in Ukraine) was built between 1550s-1616 by a Polish noblemen of Herburt family - Castellan of Lwow Stanislaw Herburt and Starosta od Dobromyl Jan Szczesny Herburt. The castle never served as a residence. Its function was exclusively defensive, but nevertheless its interior featured a range of allegorical paintings and frescoes, including those representing Zebrzydowski's rebellion in 1609, in which Jan Szczesny Herburt had taken part. Before WWII, a marker including the construction date "1586" was placed on the enormous entrance tower, together with the inscription "SHKL" (Stanislaw Herburt, the Castellan of Lwow) and family eagles. The fortress survived a siege by Cossack forces and encounters with Duke Rakoczy's Hungarians and the Swedes. It was in use until the end of the 18th century, but in 1784 the owner allowed the neighbouring Basilian monks to dismantle the castle's defensive walls for the needs of the monastery. Currently, about a half of the castle is preserved, including the abovementioned tower and some walls. The “PL-UA.History by drone” project consists of 100 short film productions depicting architectural monuments that were created in the period of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The series of short documentary films were screened in Ukraine. A Polish-Ukrainian team consisting of historians, journalists, writers, non-governmental organisations and youth joined forces to create the films.
