14 rare butterfly species recorded at Wakro Butterfly Meet in Arunachal

The third edition of the Wakro Butterfly Meet 2026 in Arunachal Pradesh's Lohit district turned into a colourful celebration of biodiversity, with participants recording an impressive 206 butterfly species, including 14 rare varieties, during the event. Organised by Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary in collaboration with the Kamlang Valley Nature Club, the meet brought together students, nature enthusiasts and wildlife experts to explore the region's rich ecological diversity. On the second day, students and participants ventured deep into the lush forests of Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary, embarking on an adventurous nature trek that offered them a firsthand glimpse of the area's remarkable flora and fauna. Accompanied by botanists, butterfly experts and biologists, the young participants learned about the intricate relationship between butterflies, plants and their natural habitats, gaining valuable insights into the importance of maintaining ecological balance. Beyond butterfly watching, the organisers introduced several engaging activities, including stone painting and aqua therapy, combining environmental education with recreation to make conservation awareness more interactive. The recording of 206 butterfly species, including 14 rare ones, highlighted the sanctuary's rich biodiversity and its significance as a habitat for butterflies. The meet also underscored the growing importance of citizen participation in biodiversity documentation and conservation, particularly in Arunachal Pradesh, which is renowned for its extraordinary natural wealth. Through such initiatives, organisers hope to inspire younger generations to become active guardians of the environment while promoting Wakro as a destination for nature-based tourism and biodiversity exploration. #arunachalpradesh #northeastindia #butterfly #wakrobutterflymeet
