Amarnath Yatra 2026: Baltal To Pahalgam Complete Guide (Which Route is Best?) Part 2 The Amarnath Yatra is an annual Hindu pilgrimage to the sacred Amarnath Cave, located at an altitude of 3,888 meters (12,756 feet) in the Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the journey attracts hundreds of thousands of devotees each summer who travel to witness a naturally forming ice stalagmite inside the cave, revered as the Shiva Lingam. Spiritual Significance According to Hindu tradition, the Amarnath Cave is the exact location where Lord Shiva revealed the secret of immortality and the creation of the universe to his consort, Goddess Parvati. The ice lingam is formed by freezing water drops falling from the cave roof and typically waxes and wanes with the phases of the moon, reaching its peak around the summer festival of Shravan Purnima. Primary Routes Pilgrims generally choose between two distinct trekking paths to reach the shrine: The Baltal Route: A shorter, highly steep 14-kilometer trek. It is more physically demanding but allows fit pilgrims to complete the round trip in one to two days. The Pahalgam Route: The traditional 36 to 48-kilometer path starting near Pahalgam. It involves a more gradual, scenic ascent over three to five days, passing notable landmarks like Sheshnag Lake and Panchtarni. Conditions and Logistics The pilgrimage occurs during a brief 45 to 60-day window between July and August when the snow clears sufficiently to open the trails. Because of the extreme altitude, low oxygen levels, and unpredictable Himalayan weather, the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) strictly regulates the event. All participants must secure mandatory pre-registration permits and pass rigorous medical fitness evaluations before beginning the trek.
