In the English Channel, between England and France, lies a tiny island where cars are banned, the streets have no lights, and until surprisingly recently, the whole place was ruled like something out of the Middle Ages. Welcome to Sark — for more than 400 years, the last feudal territory in Europe.
In this 4K travel documentary, we explore how people live on Sark, a two-square-mile island of just 500 people that belongs to the British Crown yet governs itself. For centuries it was ruled by a hereditary lord known as the Seigneur, under a feudal system granted by Queen Elizabeth I back in 1565 — a system that only came to an end in 2008, when the island finally voted to become a democracy. Yet in many ways, Sark still feels frozen in time.
There are no cars here — only tractors, bicycles, and horse-drawn carriages, and even the ambulance is towed behind a tractor. There are no street lights either, which is exactly why Sark became the world's first Dark Sky Island, with some of the clearest, darkest, most star-filled skies in Europe. We explore daily life on this car-free island, cross the dizzying clifftop path of La Coupée, visit the Seigneur's historic manor of La Seigneurie, and find out what it's really like to live in one of the last truly quiet corners of the modern world.
This is life on Europe's last feudal island — a place that chose to keep the past alive.
