I spent the evening wandering the old Shikumen lanes, breaking down what Shikumen really is. It’s a fascinating mix: built by foreign merchants, but rooted in traditional Jiangnan home styles. Back in the day, lots of families lived packed together in these lanes — neighbours always right there, face to face. That tight living situation made me think of the old Six-Foot Lane story, a sweet ancient tale about neighbourly respect. I also talk about how this kind of dense community life compares to crowded neighbourhoods in Europe and North America. First, we check out all 21 floats on static display. There’s even a Sun Wukong float from Journey to the West. We waited around for quite a while, and finally got to see these glowing floats roll out for the night parade. It was really cool seeing modern light art and old Chinese myths come alive, right inside these historic Shikumen lanes. Such a nice clash of old Shanghai heritage and a modern festival. #Shanghai #Shikumen #ShanghaiTourismFestival
