Relics of Tides by Krithika K is a couture womenswear collection inspired by marine preservation, the Japanese art of Gyotaku and the natural process of crystallization. Presented at the JD Design Awards 2026 (JDDA 2026), the collection transforms the beauty and fragility of ocean life into contemporary luxury fashion through sculptural tailoring, structured silhouettes and fluid draping. Inspired by seashells, ocean tides and crystal formations, the collection features seafoam-toned matte satin, delicate tulle, Capiz shells and sustainable lab-grown borax crystal embellishments. Crystal-inspired surfaces recreate the textures of naturally formed crystals, while translucent layers and flowing trains evoke the movement of waves and drifting sea currents. From sculpted corsetry and fluid gowns to dramatic overskirts, elongated coats and elegant pantsuits, each silhouette balances sharp construction with soft drapery, creating a refined expression of strength and femininity. It combines: Japanese Gyotaku art Marine-inspired fashion Seashell textures Crystal-inspired embellishment Sculptural tailoring Structured silhouettes Translucent layers Fluid draping and flowing trains Sustainable couture techniques 🧵 Materials & Colours Fabrics: Matte Satin and Tulle Embellishments: Capiz Shells and Lab-Grown Borax Crystals Colour: Seafoam 🎨 Design Process & Challenges One of the major challenges was achieving consistent lab-grown crystal growth. While the required measurements were maintained, crystals sometimes took two to three days to develop, while prolonged growth could cause them to detach from the fabric because of their weight. Garment construction presented another technical challenge. Crystal-covered seam allowances had to be carefully hammered before joining the panels. Even then, achieving clean and smooth seam finishes was difficult because the remaining crystals created uneven edges. The process demanded additional precision, patience and technical problem-solving to achieve the refined finish expected of couture garments. 🏆 JD Design Awards 2026 Through Relics of Tides, Krithika K translates the beauty and fragility of the ocean into contemporary couture.
