We tested the new double paddle canoe prototype canoes on the 70 mile wilderness section of the John Day River from Clarno to Cottonwood at 2000 CFS. Early in the trip we swamped in the class 2 and 3 rapids, but this was to be expected due to the fact that we were deliberately pushing these low volume pack canoes past their intended limits to see how they would handle more extreme conditions. Normally, I'd simple design a more appropriate boat for this sort of water. After the first day in solo boats we switched to the experimental catamaran system which exceeded all expectations allowing us to paddle and maneuver even when swamped. Overall it was a good time and pushing the boats past their load and conditions gave valuable insight for the next generation of canoes. I should have a detailed trip report up in a few days.
