Miyamoto Musashi wrote that he fought more than sixty bouts from the age of thirteen and never once lost. Then, looking back past thirty, he wrote that he had not won because he had mastered anything.
This documentary follows his own account in the Go Rin no Sho and the 21 short rules he left a week before he died, the Dokkōdō. It turns them into five plain moves for today: Audit, Practice, Own, Less, Alone. It also looks honestly at the legend of the duel on Ganryū Island, and at what the earliest records actually say.
Is your record proof that you're good? Musashi's answer took him about twenty more years of training, morning and evening. Start counting mornings, not wins.
Which of his 21 rules would you break first? Tell us in the comments.
