Cook River, Gateway & Bay Run Ride

The journey begins at the edge of Sydney Airport, where the dramatic sight of jets taking off against the skyline frames the start of the Cook’s River Cycleway. Pedalling away from the tarmac, the trail quickly softens into a green corridor, tracking past the historic market gardens of Tempe and Marrickville, where rows of fresh produce offer a glimpse into the valley's agricultural past.Continuing along the winding path, you pass Wolli Creek—the peaceful waterway feeding into the main river —before transitioning onto the GreenWay, a lush urban environmental corridor. A key highlight of this section is a stop at the distinctive brick arch bridges. Here, you can take a moment to admire the vibrant tunnel artwork and murals that bring local history and urban culture to life under the sandstone and brickwork.Leaving the river behind, you head north to tackle a classic Sydney loop: The Bay Run. This popular 7-kilometre circuit offers uninterrupted water views, taking you past the iconic, heritage-listed Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre swimming pool nestled on the shoreline. After completing the scenic waterfront lap, you turn back around, tracing your steps along the familiar paths to head home. Bird of the Day: The Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis molucca) Traditionally, the Australian white ibis is a native wetland bird, instantly recognisable by its brilliant white plumage, bald black head, and a long, down-curved beak perfectly designed for probing mud for crustaceans. Due to drought and loss of natural inland habitats over recent decades, the ibis migrated en masse to coastal cities like Sydney. Highly adaptable, they quickly learned that urban environments offer an absolute abundance of food. Why is it called a "Bin Chicken"? The affectionate, distinctly Aussie nickname "bin chicken" comes from the bird's notorious scavenging habits. Instead of foraging in wetlands, urban ibis are famous for rummaging through public rubbish bins, tipping over trash cans, and boldly snatching food from picnic blankets. Their transition from majestic wetland bird to relentless garbage scavenger cemented their status as a beloved, yet cheeky, icon of Australian city life.
