UK's Biggest Single Oil Discovery Ever — 7 BILLION Barrels
The UK's biggest single oil discovery ever holds more than 7 billion barrels, and it sits under the Atlantic just west of the Shetland Islands. The Clair field was found by BP in 1977, yet it took 28 years before the first barrel finally came up.
In this video, we explore why the largest oil field in British history was shelved again and again: fractured 400-million-year-old sandstone, weak reservoir pressure and wells that flowed one day and failed the next. You will see how 3D seismic, a breakthrough well test in 1996, a giant platform lifted in a single move, the 4.5 billion pound Clair Ridge project and the world's first offshore use of low-salinity water injection (LoSal) finally unlocked it, and why most of that oil is still down there today.
We also compare Clair with Forties, Brent and the controversial Rosebank field, and look at what it means for Britain's shrinking North Sea reserves. Should the UK go after every barrel, or let the North Sea era end? Tell us in the comments.
