How much of our life is really our choice, and how much is shaped by karma, conditioning and forces beyond our control? And if God is guiding us from within, how do we recognize His direction?
In this discussion of Bhagavad-gita 18.61, David B. Wolf explores free will, destiny, karma and divine guidance through Krishna’s description of Paramatma, the Supersoul situated within the heart of every living being.
The Bhagavad-gita describes the material body as a machine and explains how our habits, desires and identification with the modes of material nature can restrict our freedom. Yet as consciousness becomes clearer, our range of choice expands. Karma is not simply something that happens to us. We can change our karma, transcend conditioned patterns and learn to respond more consciously.
The discussion explores Krishna as the “Supreme Facilitator,” who honors our free will while continually guiding us toward our highest good. Through practical examples involving communication, habits, suffering and spiritual practice, the class considers how we can become more receptive to that guidance and discover a happiness and safety that do not depend on controlling external circumstances.
