A dead Baseband CPU usually means an iPhone is unrepairable—until now. In this video, we work on an iPhone 16 Pro Max with no modem firmware and a dead BB CPU resulting from a charging circuit failure. Every repair tech knows this as a "No Fix" scenario, but today, we're trying a crazy workaround that actually brings the cellular signal back to life!
The Backstory & Repair Summary:
This iPhone 16 Pro Max originally came in with charging issues (bad ACE / USB PD controller). After fixing the charging circuit, the phone still had no modem firmware. After ruling out a board interposer connection issue, I moved to the Baseband PMU power supply stage.
By injecting 1.2V into the GPIO_SEQ_PMU_TO_BBPMU_RESET_L line, I noticed a 230mA draw (normal is 30-40mA). Thermal imaging pointed to a short on the PP_3V1_LDO10 line, leading straight into the paired Baseband CPU. Since the BB CPU is paired to the Main CPU, replacing it isn't an option. So, I tried something experimental: removing the BB PMU, masking the shorted pad with UV solder mask on both the board and the chip, and reballing it with a missing ball.
The result? The phone activates, reads the SIM, and makes calls perfectly! While I might not be the first technician to ever encounter this, this video serves as the first fully documented repair and step-by-step instruction available online for bypassing this fatal short.
