The utility grid goes down. But the servers are still running.
How does a data center maintain critical power during a utility outage—and how do engineers verify that the backup systems actually worked?
In Episode 001 of Critical Systems Explained (CSE), we follow a representative data center electrical system through utility power loss, UPS battery support, generator startup, automatic transfer, and the engineering verification needed to establish reliable backup operation.
In this episode, we examine:
• How data centers distribute electrical power to critical IT loads
• How online UPS systems maintain output during utility failure
• Battery support, DC bus operation, and inverter continuity
• Generator startup versus acceptable voltage and frequency
• Automatic transfer switch (ATS) operation and source selection
• Transfer commands versus verified electrical conditions
• Generator-backed operation and cooling system dependencies
• Engineering verification and restoration of normal power
The key engineering lesson: A running generator does not necessarily mean acceptable backup power is available. And a successful transfer command does not necessarily prove that critical equipment is receiving power.
Reliable operation requires verification of the complete electrical path—not just individual equipment status indications.
Critical Systems Explained explores the electrical power, cooling, controls, automation, and reliability systems behind the infrastructure our modern world depends on.
