SHAIZĀWO EINA KASOMWO LONG KAKĀ (Part 1)|A Tangkhul Naga Folktale|Folktales of Northeast India|

Achālakhā Shaizāwo eina Kasomwo pheivā ngaroka. Ani khani wui hi mashit pheivā kasāna. Ngareo pheivā maningmana. Ani khani hithādā ngazek ngaroka, "Imāk ini ngalā long kā ngaroksa, ina natāngli rā kaga, nanā itāngli rākā jilu da ngazek ngroka". Chithāākhā kum kayākha rip kāngathei sikhala da ngazek ngarek laga kum tharuk rip kā ngatheisa chi ngarok howa. [Once upon a time, two close friends, Kasomwo and Shaizawo, made a solemn vow. They promised to spend six years in the Long (the traditional Tangkhul dormitory). Determined to keep their promise, they left their families, wives, and children and went to separate Longshim. Not long after they entered the Long, Kasomwo's father passed away. With no one left to care for his home and family, Kasomwo left the Long and returned to his village. Shaizawo, however, remained faithful to his vow. After completing five years in the Long, with only one year left, Shaizawo secretly slipped home one day, even though leaving the Long before completing the vow was forbidden. He asked his family to raise a pig for the feast that would mark the end of his stay, and told them to plant meikachi (tobacco). Shaizawo then sent a group of women friends from the Long to his home to collect the tobacco and namrei (chives). His elderly parents welcomed them warmly, and the mother filled their sop (traditional conical basket) to the brim with fresh tobacco.
