On Thursday, October 15, 2026, President Trump called Ukraine's strikes on Russian fuel plants a disgrace — plants that make diesel, he said, a fuel America and the world need. On Friday afternoon, October 16, more than 1,400 miles (about 2,350 km) from Ukraine, a column of black smoke rose over the Siberian forest near Surgut. Drones had hit Gazprom's Surgut condensate stabilization plant — the first attack on this plant in history.
Why it matters: the plant turns condensate from Siberian gas fields into winter diesel, jet fuel and gasoline. It is designed for 12 million tons of raw material a year, and its dewaxing unit makes the diesel that keeps trucks, tanks and generators running in deep frost. Six days earlier, Russia had partly lifted its diesel export ban — 500,000 tons in the first stage — "to carry out the agreements" between the presidents of Russia and the United States.
In this video: where Surgut is and why this plant matters. The afternoon, hour by hour. The 500,000 tons of diesel. What exactly burns and how the plant works. Why winter diesel matters at 15°F and at forty below. What "disgrace" was really about. A bipartisan bill in Congress against the diesel deal. How a drone flies 1,400 miles. Putin: "there is work to be done." Washington's warnings and Zelensky's answer in Brussels. The reported 100-day pause. Gazprom's silence, Novak's promise and peanut oil in diesel. Three scenarios for what comes next. And the name on the plant's gate.
The governor did not name the site; the plant was identified from videos and photos. Damage has not been confirmed by satellite yet. The drone type and launch site were not disclosed — the route on the map is approximate. Reports about U.S. warnings to Kyiv and about the 100-day deal are unofficial. Barrels per day is an approximate conversion. Distances are straight-line. Quotes are translated.
